(i) In the PDA's Survival Checklist entry, amend step #8 to read "Find or construct a more permanent habitat (refer to Quick Start Guide)". The solution is straightforward and will take very little effort. You want a player to build a crude seabase as quickly as possible to keep the logistics functioning and the cycle of positive emotions flowing, and for that, you need to make it more obvious that a tube alone is good enough for those players who don't read a tool description. Beginnings are such delicate times, to steal a line from Dune. Some reading this might roll their eyes and call me an idiot, but I'm just going to point at that 33% drop-off in players who bought the game, installed it, booted it up, and then quit before attempting one of the most basic, satisfying aspects of the game. That frustration is going to lead less invested players to quit. During those 1-2 hours, frustration is mounting quickly: since the player's instinct is to collect everything in sight, the lifepod's storage fills up almost immediately, and no seabase means managing a bunch of tiny floating storage lockers. ![]() I tried to wait until I found a room module, which of course takes a good 1-2 hours before stumbling across the multipurpose room blueprint on the floating island. Without any size reference and without knowing that a tube would grow supports when placed, I assumed when I reviewed the building menu that I was looking at passageways between functional rooms, not freestanding structures - useless on their own. As careful as I was to read data entries throughout the game, it never occurred to me that the description for my basic tools would contain critical plot instructions. The "Quick Start Guide" in the data entry for the Habitat Builder mentioned starting with a basic compartment, but I never even saw that data entry. But looking at the menu in the Habitat Builder, it was not at all clear that a single tube section is, totally alone, a functioning base within which I could build storage lockers. I was careful to read the survival guide on my PDA, which mentions the importance of building a seabase, I wanted to build a seabase because it seemed like a cool thing to do, and I desperately needed the storage. There's no guarantee they all quit for the same reason, but I can't help noticing that the drop-off happened at a point that nearly caused me to quit for good, too. But only 48% of players built a basic seabase which means that fully a third of all players who bought this game, installed it, and jumped in the water, quit before engaging in one of the first and most basic, satisfying activities. That said, looking at the plot-based achievements, it's interesting (i) that only 8.5% of players finished the game, and (ii) that the biggest drop-off occurs between players jumping in the water and players building their first crude seabase, which shouldn't be separated by very much gameplay.ħ5% of players jump in the water, which I assume means 25% of players bought it on sale and haven't installed, or finished playing during the beta before achievements activated. Long version: for the record, I just finished the game and I love it it's in my lifetime Top 100. without researching tips and tricks, and without any involvement in the online community) aren't realizing that they can make a seabase out of a single tube section, and are quitting out of frustration over storage issues. There are also converters, which convert the voltage of your electronics to avoid blowing a fuse in your hotel room or burning out your favorite electronic devices. International adapters allow travelers to use their electronics and charging devices in any electrical outlet by converting the shape and size of the prong socket. A decent travel adapter is going to make the biggest difference when it comes to keeping your devices charged and ready to go. Of course, the right travel gear plays a huge part in optimizing the experience. If you prefer to travel as light as possible, get an international adapter set, which allows you to take only the adapters you need.Traveling internationally requires serious planning and preparation in order to ensure that everything goes off without a hitch. Note that these won’t always work for appliances that need to be grounded, which will require a more expensive grounding adapter. If you shop around, you can usually find one for less than $10 online ( this one also comes with a surge protector). If you travel a lot, invest in a universal travel adapter, which lets you slide out different plug formations so that you can use the adapter in outlets in any country. If you’re packing lots of devices (like a camera, smartphone, and tablet), you should invest in multiple adapters so that you can charge all of your electronics at once. Most are small and lightweight, making them easy to pack. An adapter will allow you only to plug your appliance into another type of outlet. If you see something like “INPUT AC 120/240 V 50-60 Hz 1300 W,” then your device is dual-voltage, and you can safely use it for voltages anywhere between 120 V and 240 V. If you want to use it elsewhere, you’ll need a converter. ![]() How do you know if your device is dual-voltage? Check the label and/or owner’s manual: If it says something similar to “INPUT AC 120 VAC 60 Hz 200 W,” then your gadget is single-voltage and can only be used on 120 V. Most smartphones, tablets, and other gadgets are dual-voltage, and if you use a converter on something that is already dual-voltage, you can damage your device. The vast majority of modern travel gadets are dual-voltage, meaning they automatically convert to run on other voltage systems. For a complete list of voltage requirements by country, visit .īefore you run out and buy a voltage converter, there’s a very important piece of information you need to know. While Japan, most of North America, and parts of South America and the Caribbean use voltage between 100 and 125, the vast majority of the world uses 220 to 240 volts. Most American-made electrical appliances work at 110 volts. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you're wanting to purchase these switches dont do it. Wanted to send them back but I dont have any switches to replace them with after spending dollars on these. Its not a matter of simply reconnecting and re adding them as new switches because the reset procedure doesnt work. Bought 6 of these, all worked well for about a week, then stopped working one at a time. Reviewed in the United States on 13 April 2015 The saga of my home automation continues, but I still have this feeling this was the right setup to go with. This time cutting the power didn't fix it either, so the electrician is coming back to see if they can do anything. After I paired all of my items back to the hub (I'll detail that whole thing when I can update my Wink review) I could not get the one that had to have a hard reset to work again. Unfortunately though a few days later my Wink hub crashed as part of the major outage and I basically had to start over again. I was asked to shut power off to the switches from the breaker and that did the trick to getting them back online. So after about 20 min on the phone with Wink support we discovered that my light switch was part of a group of switches that needed a hard reset. I'm going to try to reconfigure everything tonight and give these one more shot. ![]() This kept us from using the switch on our light post on our driveway (disappointingly the one I wanted to use it with the most) and as you can see from the picture left us with three Tapt switches and one regular. One thing that he found during the install is that these don't work with lights on the GFI so it just kept flipping the reset and wouldn't stay on. Self install was pretty difficult, and we ended up getting an electrician to install these for us. Our house doesn't have the requested "red wire" unless we were already working with a 3-way light, which you aren't supposed to use with these switches. My biggest complaint though so far though has been with installation. I don't think that being able to control a smart switch with a smart bulb from either the wall, or switch should be considered a big ask, but maybe home automation just isn't there yet. One will not connect to the app and is only working at the base, and one will not turn on from the wall if its off on the app. Out of the four switches we have installed, two of them don't work properly. Just my two cents. This product has been kind of disappointing so far. I am down to the last one of these and will be replacing it shortly. They are quirky (pun intended) and will go offline randomly. Keep in mind that the device type required will not update the status of the switch in the app if you press the switch buttons.Īs my two cents, if you are to use the ST hub, get rid of these switches. PostgreSQL is one of the most popular databases in the industry that is used for various web, mobile and analytics applications. It is backed by 20 years of open-source development, and supports both SQL (relational) and JSON (non-relational) querying. PostgreSQL is a fully featured database management system (DBMS) with a strong emphasis on extensibility and SQL compliance. For further reading and tutorials on managing a Postgresql database, head here. If you did not understand the preceding paragraph then read the next section. This guide demonstrates how to install Postgresql on Ubuntu 20.04 server in 9 steps, including the setup. The bottom line is this: if you try to start an application program and it complains that it cannot connect to the database, you should consult your site administrator or, if that is you, the documentation to make sure that your environment is properly set up. The environment variable PGPORT might also have to be set. For example, if the database server machine is a remote machine, you will need to set the PGHOST environment variable to the name of the database server machine. If your site administrator has not set things up in the default way, you might have some more work to do. Be sure to follow closely the section about setting up the appropriate environment variables. If you are installing PostgreSQL yourself, then refer to Chapter 17 for instructions on installation, and return to this guide when the installation is complete. If you are not sure whether PostgreSQL is already available or whether you can use it for your experimentation then you can install it yourself. If that is the case, you should obtain information from the operating system documentation or your system administrator about how to access PostgreSQL. It is possible that PostgreSQL is already installed at your site, either because it was included in your operating system distribution or because the system administrator already installed it. Before you can use PostgreSQL you need to install it, of course. ![]() ![]() ![]() (The Downton Abbey DVDs complicated matters further: In addition to three hour-long episodes per disc, there is a first title video that is all three episodes in one file. Each disc typically has multiple shows, so you will need to select each in the Titles drop-down in turn, make whatever configuration changes (like captions/subtitles) and then click Add to Queue to add that show to the ripping queue. If you’re just ripping the one video, click Start and Handbrake will do its thing. This may require a bit of experimentation. Possibilities range from nothing (increasingly uncommon) to hard-coded “VobSub”-type subtitles and “soft captions” which can be enabled and disabled on the fly by most common video players these days. ![]() If you want captions/subtitles, use the Subtitles tab to examine what’s available. Generally speaking, the movie you want is the longest of the available videos. Ripping a DVD movie is straightforward: You select Source and then the disc, and after Handbrake has analyzed the disc, you can examine the videos in the Title drop-down. And they stream nicely from my home server to the Roku or Amazon Fire TV using Plex too. This will provide a reasonably-sized, reasonable quality version of the video(s) in a form that works and looks great on all modern devices, including Windows PCs and tablets and Windows Phones. Your needs may vary, but I find that the stock “Universal” preset works well for DVD movies and TV shows. And I ripped them to H.264/MP4 with Handbrake. If I could have purchased these shows in HD electronically, I would have.īut I bought the DVD versions. One of the nice things about that decryption technology is that it also removes the region encoding that would normally make watching an international DVD disc hard or impossible. So these days, my DVD purchases are similar to my music CD purchases, rare events and related to content that I simply cannot get elsewhere.įor example: my two most recent DVD purchases were the latest season of Rick Steves’ Europe (the 2015 – 2016 season), which is not available in Blu-Ray for some reason, and the UK version of Downton Abbey Season 5, which I bought as a Christmas present for my wife she loves the show and we power-watch it before it airs in the US (which it is doing right now, on PBS). For starters, DVDs provide standard definition video (720 x 480 or less for US discs) that doesn’t hold up well against the HD streaming quality at services like iTunes, Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. My own need for DVD ripping has gone down a lot over the years. ![]() I’ve tried this solution with a few recent DVDs and it’s worked well. You can download the latest version of this standalone DLL file from the VideoLAN web site just copy it into the Handbrake directory (C:\Program Files\Handbrake by default) and you should be good to go. (The HD version that also decrypts Blu-Ray is even more expensive at about $70 to $135).įortunately, there is a free decryption solution called libdvdcss. And while I do still use the HD version of this software, it’s gotten a bit too expensive to recommend to anyone without a huge DVD collection: You will pay about $46 for one year of updates or up to $78 for a lifetime. Years ago I paid for a software utility called SlySoft AnyDVD to handle the copy protection removal, or decryption. The software is free, easy to use, and infinitely configurable if you want to over-think it. I use and recommend Handbrake for ripping DVDs. And I do not do so personally: I’ve purchased all of the DVDs I’ve ripped, and they’re still here at home stored in the basement next to my CD collection, in boxes. Note: In the event this isn’t patently obvious, I am not advocating that anyone steal content, let alone distribute or share it. In addition to a DVD drive attached to your PC (obviously), you need two pieces of software: A utility that can recognize the videos found on a DVD and “rip” (copy) them into popular video formats like H.264/MP4, and a decryption utility that can remove the copy protection found on commercial DVD discs, a “fair use” practice that I feel is legal (in the US) for personal use cases. So here’s how I rip DVD movies and TV shows using free software. While the world has clearly moved on to HD video, many of us still have massive DVD collections and would like to make this content available digitally so that it can be enjoyed on mobile devices and streamed to screens around the home via Plex or similar solutions. ![]() |
